2010 Record Solar PV Capacity Installations in Europe

24 Feb

The European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) reports that growth in solar photovoltaic (PV) power doubled this past year, with 16GW installed in 2010.

This brings total global solar PV installed power to almost 40GW, an increase of 70% from the 23GW total installed in 2009.  The biggest markets for solar in 2010 were Germany, with 7GW of new installations, and Italy, with 3GW.  EPIA notes 2010 saw the highest ever solar PV capacity additions in Europe.

In contrast to the global wind market, which contracted for the first time in two decades, the global solar PV growth rate doubled in size.  This is due to attractive feed-in-tariffs that encourage project development and the steady fall in solar panel prices.  Over the past few years, average prices have dropped in half from $3.7 per watt in 2007 to $1.8 per watt in 2010.  Read more…
