Facing Power Deficits and High Carbon Emissions, India Looks to Renewables

According to a report from India’s Economic Times, India plans to add 35GW of new renewable energy capacity by 2015 in order to address serious power deficits and reduce growing carbon emissions.

Renewable energy investments reached around $3 billion as of March 2010, but according to the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency, by March 2011 that figure will likely rise by 10 or 15%.

India’s Federal Planning Commission says that India faces a nearly 12% power shortage during times of peak power consumption.  To reduce this gap, the Indian government is planning to increase solar and nuclear power generation to 20GW each by 2022.  Read more here…
